So far I've been in Russia for less than a week, but I've made it through my first week of teaching. I teach Monday-Thursday and we get lunches at the schools each day so that's how I've been able to experience real Russian food so far. (I wasn't entirely sure what to expect)
Monday:
Monday was my first real experience with Russian food and I can say I was not disappointed, I was actually pretty surprised at how good the food was. I got borscht right off the bat and even though I was a little concerned (not really sure how I felt about beets), it was amazing. Something else I learned that first day of teaching was that everything is hot. Drinks are hot, soup is hot, food is hot, etc. Also tomatoes are served with everything. The drink this day was hot lemon water and it was also delicious.
I learned bread tastes a lot different than the bread in America, and I think it's probably because they don't use preservatives in their breads here, I'm starting to get used to it though and I'm beginning to like it more. (Which is good because they also serve bread with every meal)
Tuesday:
I'm not entirely sure what the soup was on Tuesday, it was a little like chicken noodle soup, but it was awesome. We also got a sausage, tomato and cabbage, with hot lemon water.
Wednesday:
This is apparently the same meal they got last Wednesday, the soup was basically water (with a little bit of flavor) and noodles and we put croutons in it, it was actually pretty good, even though it sounds kind of weird. There was a rice ball and beets that were also served with it and it was really good. This was the day I was served kompot, which is a Russian berry water and it was awesome. Pretty sure it's been my favorite hot drink.
Thursday:
This was another one of those soups that seemed a little like chicken noodle soup, it was served with beets, some sort of rice/chicken ball and grechikha (which is Russian buckwheat) and I've discovered I love grechikha, it came with more hot lemon water.
On Wednesday night I had a "wake-up call" from my head teacher when she brought me out some dinner and said I needed to eat. For the first 4 days I had only been eating one meal, partially because I hadn't known what to cook and also because I hadn't realized it was time to eat ever. I got my first taste of grechikha though and I fell in love. :)
My very first purchase in Russia was my Diet Pepsi (Pepsi Light here) and some sort of cake thing. I half expected it to be cheesecake and was a little sad when it wasn't. But it was still pretty good, it was a little strange because the fruit on top was in a jello.
I've also discovered Russian candies are AMAZING. Their gummies are seriously to die for and I'm already addicted to them. Also, ice cream is the bomb.com here, but I don't have any pictures of it because I ate it way too fast. That's how good it was. Baby face chocolate is a little creepy but tastes fairly good.
But, even in a world full of different foods here in Russia, there's still a little taste of America in a few of it's corners.
Russian McDonalds
Russian KFC
